Pacific Northwest marine artist Steve Mayo has had a lifelong interest in maritime art and
history. During his 50-year professional art career, he was also, for 20 years, a licensed commercial tugboat and oil-spill recovery vessel captain. He has utilized his sailing and commercial experience coupled with years of research to ensure accurate and evocative depictions of historic vessels. A major focus has been his portrayal of the British and Spanish ships that explored the Northwest in the late 18th century using information gleaned from journals and logbooks.

He is also known for his strong paintings of classic steam tugs, diesel tugs, fishing boats and
steam freighters of the 20th century.

He works from his studio overlooking the bay in Bellingham where he has resided for 50 years.
